QR code for Amazon

An Amazon link copied from the address bar is mostly tracking. Encoding it works, and it produces a far denser code than it needs to. This turns the short form into a code and measures the difference, which matters when the code goes on packaging.

What the code should contain

Only http and https links are allowed. Missing schemes become https.

Finder squares stay square whichever you pick. They are what a scanner locates the code with.

The blank margin scanners need. 4 is the standard minimum.

Amazon does not give you a code

  • Amazon has no QR code generator for a product listing. Sellers get codes in some advertising and logistics tools, but a normal listing offers a link and nothing else.
  • That makes generating one the normal route here rather than a workaround, which is not true of the social platforms.

Which Amazon link to encode, measured

Characters become modules, and modules decide how small the code can be printed and still read. These are the same link, in the forms Amazon actually hands out, each one encoded and decoded when this page was built.

Everything after the ASIN is disposable. The product title in the URL is there for search engines, and the ref parameter records where you clicked from. Neither means anything once the address is a printed square, and together they can more than double the length.

If you are an affiliate, the tag parameter is the one piece of the tail worth keeping, because without it you are not credited. Add it back to the short form rather than keeping the whole address bar URL.

Where a Amazon code actually goes

Product packaging and inserts
A code pointing at the listing for reviews, refills or the rest of the range. Space is tight and the surface may be curved, so the short link earns its place.
Print advertising and catalogues
Read at desk distance from paper. The measured minimum is usually enough, and the short form leaves room for the price and the name beside it.
Shelf talkers and market stalls
Read at arm's length in shop lighting. Print above the minimum and keep the quiet zone clear of the shelf edge.

Three ways these go wrong

Encoding the address bar URL
It carries the product title and a search reference, which is a lot of characters for nothing. On packaging with a fixed footprint, that difference decides whether the code reads.
Dropping the affiliate tag by accident
Shortening a link is right, but if you are earning commission the tag is the one parameter that pays you. Rebuild the link as the short form plus the tag rather than trimming from the end.
Encoding a regional link for an international audience
An amazon.com link takes a UK customer to the US store. If the product is sold in several markets, either encode the customer's market or point at a page of your own that redirects.

The download here stays locked until a decoder has read the finished code back, so the first of those cannot happen to a file you get from this page. For a code whose destination might need to change after printing, the dynamic generator keeps the printed symbol and moves the target.

Amazon QR code questions

How do I make a QR code for an Amazon product?

Take the ten character ASIN from the listing address and build the short form, amazon.com/dp/ASIN, then paste that into the generator on this page. It reaches the same listing as the long URL and produces a noticeably smaller printed code.

Does Amazon have its own QR code generator?

Not for an ordinary product listing. Some seller advertising and logistics tools produce codes for their own purposes, but for putting a code on packaging or a flyer you generate it from the link yourself.

Can I keep my affiliate tag in the QR code?

Yes, and you should if you are earning commission. Add the tag parameter to the short amazon.com/dp/ASIN form rather than encoding the whole address bar URL, so you keep the credit without the rest of the tracking.

Will the code work in every country's Amazon?

No. The domain is part of the address, so an amazon.com code takes everyone to the US store. For an international print run, point the code at a page you control that sends people to their own market.

QRMakery builds this code on your own device. The link you paste and the file you download never reach a server.
