QR code for PayPal

PayPal already has a code. Here is what it cannot do.

PayPal has an in-app QR code for personal payments, found under the QR code icon on the app's home screen, and a separate business offering for in-person payments. You will find it under PayPal app, QR code icon. For meeting somebody in person it is the faster option, and this page is not trying to replace it. It runs out in four places.

• The in-app code assumes the payer opens PayPal and scans from inside it. Somebody pointing a plain camera at it may get a page that means nothing to them.
• It is a phone screenshot again, so there is no vector file for a printer, and the business version is supplied as a fixed kit rather than artwork you control.
• It cannot carry your branding or sit inside a layout you have designed.
• A PayPal.Me link sidesteps all of that: it is an ordinary web address, so any camera opens a payment page in a browser.

Which PayPal link to encode, measured

Characters become modules, and modules decide how small the code can be printed and still read. These are the same link, in the forms PayPal actually hands out, each one encoded and decoded when this page was built.

PayPal.Me is the shortest payment link of any platform on this site, which makes its code the smallest and the most forgiving to print. Adding a fixed amount costs two or three characters and is almost free in module terms.

The long paypal.com form adds locale parameters that change nothing for the payer. Claim the PayPal.Me handle and print that instead.

Where a PayPal code actually goes

Invoices and quotes

A fixed-amount link on a paper invoice removes the step where a client types the figure wrong. Print the amount in text beside the code so both agree.

Charity collections and donations

Read once, quickly, by somebody standing up. Print large, keep it plain, and name the cause beside the code so the payer knows what they are giving to before they scan.

Freelance and small trade work

On the back of a card or at the bottom of a quote. Use the plain link without an amount so the same card works for every job.

Three ways these go wrong

Printing the in-app code and expecting cameras to handle it

PayPal's personal QR code is designed to be scanned from inside the PayPal app. A plain camera may not take the payer anywhere useful, which is the same trap as a Spotify Code.

Encoding a link with locale parameters

They make the symbol denser and change nothing the payer sees. The PayPal.Me form is shorter and clearer.

Printing the code without your name

A payment page that appears with no context invites hesitation, and hesitation on a donation table means no payment. Put the name of the person or cause beside the square.

The download here stays locked until a decoder has read the finished code back, so the first of those cannot happen to a file you get from this page. For a code whose destination might need to change after printing, the dynamic generator keeps the printed symbol and moves the target.
