YouTube does not give you a code
- YouTube has no built-in QR code for a video on the web. The share sheet offers a link and social buttons, and the mobile app has offered a code only intermittently, so there is nothing dependable to fall back on.
- That makes generating one the normal route rather than the workaround, which is not true of LinkedIn, Instagram or Spotify.
Which YouTube link to encode, measured
Characters become modules, and modules decide how small the code can be printed and still read. These are the same link, in the forms YouTube actually hands out, each one encoded and decoded when this page was built.

The short form is not a redirect service and not a tracking wrapper. It is YouTube's own domain for the same video, which is why it is safe to print: the only thing you lose is characters.
Playlists are the outlier. A playlist identifier is a long opaque string that has no short form, so a playlist code is always denser than a video code. Plan the print size around that rather than discovering it on a proof.
Where a YouTube code actually goes
- Print advertising and packaging
- A code pointing at a demonstration video, printed alongside the product. Use the short form and print at the measured minimum for the surface, allowing extra on curved or textured packaging.
- Slides and posters at events
- Read from several metres away, which needs a much larger code than the minimum. The minimum assumes a close read; distance scanning wants roughly a tenth of the reading distance as the code width.
- Instruction manuals and labels
- Point at the exact moment in a long video with a start time. It costs a handful of characters and saves the reader scrubbing through twenty minutes of footage.
Three ways these go wrong
- Encoding the address bar URL out of habit
- It is longer than the share link for no benefit. On a product label where the code has a fixed footprint, that difference is the whole margin.
- Copying a link that carries the playlist context
- Sharing from inside a playlist appends the list identifier to the video URL, which roughly doubles the length. Open the video on its own first, then share.
- Assuming a code guarantees a view
- A scan opens the video; it does not autoplay with sound on every device, and mobile data warnings interrupt some viewers. Print the video title beside the code so the scan is a decision rather than a gamble.
The download here stays locked until a decoder has read the finished code back, so the first of those cannot happen to a file you get from this page. For a code whose destination might need to change after printing, the dynamic generator keeps the printed symbol and moves the target.

YouTube QR code questions
How do I make a QR code for a YouTube video?
Press Share under the video, copy the youtu.be link it offers, and paste it into the generator on this page. That short form encodes to a smaller symbol than the address bar URL, which matters as soon as the code is printed rather than shown on a screen.
Does YouTube have its own QR code generator?
Not on the web for individual videos. The share panel gives you a link and social buttons, and the mobile app's code feature has come and gone. Generating one from the link is the reliable route, and it also gives you a vector file, which no in-app screen does.
Can a QR code start the video at a specific time?
Yes. Tick the start-time box in the share panel before copying, or append the seconds yourself, and the code opens the video at that point. It adds only a few characters, so the effect on printed size is small.
Why is my playlist QR code so much denser?
Playlist identifiers are long opaque strings with no short equivalent, so the symbol needs a higher version and more modules. Print it larger than a plain video code, or point at a landing page you control that redirects to the playlist.
Will the code still work if I make the video private?
The code will scan and the link will resolve, but YouTube will refuse to show the video to anyone who is not permitted to see it. The code is not broken in that case; the permission is.
